Appointed by Governor Brian Kemp, the City of Mulberry transition team will serve until Mulberry City Council elections are held in November and will assist the city with the negotiation of intergovernmental agreements and preparation for providing municipal services.
Members of the Mulberry transition team include House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, Senator Clint Dixon, Representative Derrick McCollum, Mr. Jerry Hanes, and Mr. Chuck Warbington. Mr. Jerry Hanes serves as the transition team's chairman.
The new City of Mulberry will include large areas of unincorporated northeastern Gwinnett County - approximately 35,000 residents. This would include the areas most in need of checks and balances on recent growth.
NO - the new City of Mulberry will have no property taxes, ensuring the city will reduce the burdens on our community, not add to them. The purpose of the entire effort is to increase local control; not increase our tax burden!
The City of Mulberry will be governed by five city council members, each of whom will represent less than 7,000 constituents and elect a mayor from among the five. This will allow each resident to have a much greater voice for how our community grows. City Council Elections will take place this year in tandem with the General Election.
No, the new City of Mulberry will contract with Gwinnett County to continue providing many of the same county services you’ve grown used to - including services like parks and rec, police, and fire. The primary difference will be that planning and zoning decisions will be made by local City of Mulberry officials - ensuring local control over the future of our community.
The State Legislature approved and the Governor has signed legislation creating the Charter for the City of Mulberry. Voters in Mulberry approved the new city at the ballot box in May by 14 points.
